Hi, I’m Hannah!
I connect people and communities with nature by providing skill development and knowledge sharing, which enables people to thrive in local green spaces for the long term. I develop green spaces and growing sites that are practical, accessible and fit for purpose, with both environmental and social sustainability in mind.
I divide my time between practical horticulture activity and wider programme management, working on both a local and national level.
I’m the Director and Project Delivery Manager for Clydach Community Gardens, a not-for-profit environmental organisation improving community resilience, education and wellbeing through horticulture and nature based activities, and supporting the development of green spaces in Clydach, North Swansea.
I’m also the Grower and Horticulture Therapy Practitioner for Maggie’s at Singleton Hospital, Swansea. As a charity Maggie’s centres help people to take back control when cancer turns life upside down, with professional support and assistance. Maggie’s Swansea is the only centre with a dedicated vegetable garden which provides healthy and sustainable produce for visitors to the centre to enjoy. As a trained Social and Therapeutic Horticulture Practitioner (through Thrive) I help clients improve their wellbeing through professionally tailored horticulture sessions.
I have worked for a number of national organisations including the Soil Association, Lantra, Food Sense Wales and Mentera on a number of horticulture, food and farming programmes including Tyfu Cymru, Future Growers, Sustainable Food Places, Food For Life Get Togethers and Farming Connect.
I’m a trained organic grower with experience working on a number of organic small-scale commercial farms and market gardens, both in the UK and in the US. In 2017 I completed an organic grower traineeship supported by the Soil Association Future Growers scheme, to expand my practical growing skills and provide me with extensive knowledge of the commercial horticulture sector. I’m an Environmental Fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust who funded my proposed 3 months of research in the US, looking into urban food production, food system policies and local supply chain development for small scale horticulture.
Prior to retraining as an organic grower, I had a career in events management in music and the arts. Fortunately those skills have come in handy in my food and farming career and over the past 10 years I’ve programmed and delivered a range of sessions and events at conferences including Groundswell, Oxford Real Farming Conference and the Abergavenny Food Festival.
